As one of Japans most popular trading card games, Yu-Gi-Oh has managed to succeed not only in its native country but in the UK and America too. It’s spawned countless imitators and pretenders but has still managed to grow in popularity with novices and trading card game veterans alike.
Yu-Gi-Oh first started life as an animated comic strip by legendary Manga artist Kazuki Takahashi. First appearing in 1996 in Japans most popular weekly comic Shonen Jump. Konami acquired the rights to produce a trading card game based on Takahashi‘s characters and artwork and in 1998 the Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game was launched along with a 27 episode cartoon. A marketing staple with any new game release in Japan, the cartoon soon took up a following of its own and was snapped up by 4Kids; the company behind the equally successful Pokemon animated series.
Yu-Gi-Oh is a game that manages to remain fun to play without being too complex and yet can hold its own with many of the ‘older’ trading card games when it comes to depth of play. The Yu-Gi-Oh marketing machine has spawned a cartoon series that has just as big a following as the game itself as well as videogames and toys. With a game that seems to grow in popularity as the years go on, older editions are becoming highly sought after by completists and each new release is more and more hotly anticipated; there’s never been a better time to stock up on Yu-Gi-Oh!
Yugioh Media
The Yu-Gi-Oh brand will continue to be heavily supported on TV this year, as it has done since the brands launch. The Yu-Gi-Oh cartoon is one of the top rated children’s television shows both sides of the Atlantic. As well as terrestrial television broadcast, the animated series enjoys coverage on Nickelodeon and SKY TV.
Yugi Rules
Although its certainly not the most complicated TCG, Yu-Gi-Oh does have its own set of rules. Luckily for any would be duelers, the fine people at Upperdeck have published the Official Yu-Gi-Oh rules online. Handy for settling arguments or enlightening fellow players as to why they’ve just lost without even making a move (left arm of the forbidden one anybody?).
